Our History
Rev. Paul Quinn, a circuit-riding missionary who had traveled on horseback from Philadelphia, Pa., which is the seat of African Methodism in the United States, founded Quinn Chapel in the year of 1825. Upon his arrival in Brooklyn he molded a small collection of individuals, who met in the home of John and Priscilla Baltimore into an A.M.E. Congregation.
Mrs. Priscilla Baltimore became one of his staunch supporters. In view that there was not a House of Worship in the town, their meetings were held in private homes. Due to the growing power of slavery, they were necessarily obliged to proceed very cautiously, but preparation was in the making to permanently establish and build the first church The first A.M.E. Church was organized in this area stemming from those who met in Mrs. Baltimore's home.
It should also be noted that Priscilla Baltimore was known as "Mother of Black Brooklyn". She was not only instrumental in helping to establish Quinn Chapel, but help along with her husband and others in the formation of the town now known as Brooklyn.
During the years of prosperity and growth, Quinn Chapel has had many pastors, ministers and members who added something of significance to its growth. Some of the previous pastors later became Presiding Elders and Bishops.
Many things were accomplished under the leadership of these pastors. Such as cleaning and tuck-pointing of the church, purchasing of a water fountain, fully equipped office, renovation and remodeling of the church's auditorium, installation of central air-condition, renovation of the basement , latrines and kitchen and many other projects both to the interior and exterior of the church.
Under the leadership of previous pastors and current pastor Bible studies were initiated and held on a weekly basis. Youth and Young adult meetings are also held on a weekly basis to train and instruct our young people in the ways of God. Under the leadership of our current pastor, Rev. Charisse Woods, we anticipate progress and growth with the help of God. Members young and old have been added to our church. Our primary mission is to reach the unsaved and let the world know the reality of serving a true and living God. The church is very proud of our youth ushers, choir, and praise dancers who are very inspiring and helpful in our worship services.
The church is still embarking on projects to renovate and beautify our church. A handicap chair lift has been installed in the front entrance of the church. We are also currently renovating our fellowship hall to expand the space. Quinn Chapel is also trying to maintain its "HISTORICAL" significance by attempting to have our church listed as a historical landmark on the Underground Railroad Register.
We, the members of Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church, are proud to be a part of this mission that was founded 184 years ago and enthused to know that our church is the oldest AME Church, West of the Allegheny Mountains. As we continue to serve Christ we are striving to "empower, encourage and enlighten the community one person at a time."
